Les Maisons de Louis

Our history

Les Maisons de Louis – A little bit of history

It all started with Guy Conan, a farmer by his family, who traveled through the markets of the region and quickly became known, appreciated by all and nicknamed «Uncle Guy». In 1982 he made a career change and bought a bar in the harbour of Paimpol: “l’Escale”. Uncle Guy then turned it into a crêperie.

In 1991, he acquired an old fashion house not far from L’Escale and transformed it into a restaurant, “L’Islandais”. In 1993 he added four hotel rooms above the restaurant: La “Mutine”, “L’Etoile”, “La Belle Poule” and “L’Islandaise”, names given in honor of Paimpol schooners.

In 1994, Tonton Guy sold L’Escale and later in 1997 he bought a beautiful shipowner’s house next to L’Islandais, which he decided to turn into a boutique hotel connected to the first four rooms already created. The hotel’s name is «K’Loys» (Ker Loys meaning Les Maisons de Louis in Breton).

In 2001, Guy’s nephew, Jean-Marc Conan decided to join the adventure and leave the family farm to manage L’Islandais. In 2005, Uncle Guy decided to add a restaurant to the hotel, called «Bistrot de Tonton Guy».

Meanwhile, Jean-Marc decided to buy L’Escale in 2009. A few years later, in April 2012, he was given the keys to the hotel and the Bistrot. Indeed, Uncle Guy made the decision to let Jean-Marc manage the family business. In July 2012, Jean-Marc bought an old jewelry store on the harbour and turned it into a glacier / tea-room: «Adam». In December 2016, the family grew up and Jean-Marc decided to buy Madame Berthelot’s hotel (the building annexed to the hotel and L’Islandais). This was an ambitious project, with the aim of expanding the kitchens of L’Islandais and creating eight additional contemporary bedrooms on the upper floors.

In 2022, Nicolas, the eldest of Jean Marc and Anne, as well as his companion Anna, to join the adventure by taking over the formerly Eurotel le grand Bleu. Renamed “Les Hauts de Kerano”, this new hotel restaurant will have a unique identity.

This amazing adventure is still ongoing and we would like to express our sincere gratitute to all those who contributed to this success.

Les Maisons de Louis’ loyal customers make all this possible and their satisfaction remain at the core of our business.
